Update Coming SOON! An urgent animal welfare crisis in Greece has left thousands of dogs in peril. In late 2023, Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site began working with local organizations in Xanthi, Greece, to rescue over 600 sick and starving dogs from a municipal rubbish site. The homeless dog population in this area is estimated to be in the thousands, and they need our help now more than ever.
With your support, we have provided essential food, specialized medical care, and high-quality spay-neuter services to reduce overpopulation. We’ve also helped dozens of pets find foster homes and adoptive families. However, countless others still need our assistance, including Rita.
Meet Rita:
- Location: Greece
- Breed: Mix
- Age: Young
- Medical Issues: Malnutrition, heartworm-positive, parasites
- Treatment: Ongoing medication and care
Rita was discovered barely alive, suffering from leishmaniasis, a disease caused by parasites spread by sand flies. This condition leads to painful ulcers and severe internal infections. Along with testing positive for heartworm and Ehrlichia, Rita was found among trash, severely malnourished and in desperate need of immediate medical attention.
She will require months of intensive treatment to overcome these parasite diseases and regain her strength. Many other innocent dogs are in similar situations, scared and starving, often unaware of a loving home. We urgently require your help to save these lives. By donating to animal charities for sick dogs, you provide them with a fighting chance.
Join us in actively responding to this crisis and supporting local animal rescue efforts. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless dogs like Rita.

The care provided to dogs like Rita is inspiring. I learned how to adopt a dog from a rescue, and I’m considering giving a loving home to a rescue pup!
