Every year, billions of pounds of plastic, including discarded fishing gear, infiltrate our oceans, posing a grave threat to marine life. Long-term exposure to microplastics has been shown to stunt coral growth, while reefs littered with plastic are far more susceptible to disease. Given that around a quarter of all marine species rely on coral reefs at some stage of their lives, the health of these ecosystems is vital for their survival.

The dangers extend beyond coral; plastic entanglement and ingestion have been linked to the deaths or injuries of nearly 700 species, many of which are endangered. Coupled with rising sea levels, agricultural runoff, and increasing ocean temperatures, these challenges threaten coastal communities reliant on healthy ocean ecosystems.
