Deforestation and habitat loss pose significant threats to wildlife survival. In the United States, our forests are crucial, supporting over 3,000 species, including 1,300 that are threatened or endangered. These forests provide essential habitats for many mammals, birds, and amphibians.
Currently, our forests are facing serious challenges from drought, wildfires, invasive species, and urban sprawl. These factors contribute to the diminishing health of forest ecosystems, which in turn jeopardizes the animals that inhabit them. Fragmentation of these crucial habitats has led to a decline of 30% in North American bird populations since 1970, and 39% of freshwater species that depend on forested areas are now at risk of extinction.
To combat these issues, improving forest health is vital for our planet’s biodiversity. We have partnered with top wildlife conservation charities to initiate tree planting efforts in areas that need it the most. One of our collaborations is with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Future Forest Fund, which focuses on planting trees across the state. Together, we have successfully planted red oak, white pine, and white spruce in the Lake Superior region, contributing to a healthier mix of hardwood-conifer forests in northeastern Minnesota. These efforts not only provide winter cover for white-tailed deer but also enhance carbon storage and improve water quality for all species that depend on these resources.
